About

Who are you?

I’m a graduate from a California “UC” with a degree in Molecular Biology BS.  I have a ridiculous spread of a resume which includes: pharmaceutical development, law enforcement and private security, retail, entertainment-nightlife, construction, and politics.

I am currently a Term 5 Medical Student at St. George’s University, Grenada, West Indies. I completed the Foundations to Medicine (FTM)/(CFP) Charter Foundation Program in order to gain entry into the School of Medicine here at SGU.

Why is it called The Impossible Premed?

I probably have the worst GPA in all respects (non-science, science, and cumulative) known to the premed world. If my statistical analysis is correct, of the 18,000 students accepted into medical school for the 2009 entrance class, only 150 had a GPA similar to mine….and guessing at the way medical school admissions go they were probably from “underrepresented minorities”……don’t even get me started on affirmative action admissions policies……… In Summary: It’s a long shot and chances are I’ll be added to the 25,000 applicants who won’t get in this year.

Why did you create this blog?

The idea for this blog came to me after I graduated from college in 2008 and I began to volunteer at the VA Hospital 20+ hours a week. At first I wanted to write about the crazy or weird things I saw everyday there. Then I realized not only is my pre-med experience journey unique, it was just straight out bizarre. The entire process has consumed my life and set a “filter” to contextualize everything else.

Long Story Short: I’ve got some impossible odds. If I can make it, anyone with the right amount of smarts and determination can.

  1. Hey,
Just wanted to say good luck. While your GPA may set you back, it sounds like you have a unique story. I hope it works out for you!

  2. Hey,

I start CFP this August in a month. I came across your blog. Congrats on passing it! Looks like it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Thanks for giving a unique insight.

  3. Hey there,

Just came across your blog while I was checking into the best schools for medicine in the Caribbean.
FYI, I was looking into which medical school had the highest USMLE approval rating. St George University holds 84% usmle step 1 approval rating. email me if you need the full article.
I’m scheduled for orientation late October 2010.

Just one question I still cannot figure out by myself: What the heck is “Foundations to Medicine (FTM)/(CFP) Charter Foundation Program student” ???

How do I apply to this ?

Wish you luck on med school. Do your best efforts and overall be sure you are in good academic hands.

  4. Hey, congrats on moving on to the med school! I am looking to go into the charter program and just found out they raised the gpa to 3.5 from a 3.2…just my luck. Although I did B+ and above in all my upper level bio classes in undergrad, I was wondering what the difficulty level is in the charter program. How hard is it to achieve a 3.5?

What did you finish with, I believe I saw you said you were well above 3.2 after mid terms.

Thanks for the great posts of pictures and your experience.

    • I’ll send you an e-mail. You can comment on this blog again if you don’t hear from me.

      • I was wondering the same thing.

  5. Hi,

I’m Mike, a pre-med student at UF, and have been reading your blog for a while now.

I actually just started a website called http://www.mcatquestionoftheday.com, to help pre-med students study for the MCAT.

I started it a few days ago, and my goal is to use the site as a learning tool for both myself and other pre-med students around the nation.

Do you think we could form some kind of partnership? Maybe exchange links for the time being? I’d really appreciate it!

    Thanks so much,

    Mike.

  6. I visited a lot of website but I think this one holds something extra in it. “A wrong-doer is often a man that has left something undone, not always he that has done something.” by Marcus Aurelius Antoninus.

  7. hi, i just read this and i noticed you said that you probably had the worst gpa ever. i know it doesnt matter now since you’re in med school, but just for the heck of it, will you tell me what you got?

  8. Hi,
I am about to send in my applications to SGU for the fall 2012 term, and seems like I am in the same boat with you back when you were applying..

If you dont mind sharing could you tell me your stats when you applied? gpa.. etc?

Did you apply for any other of the big 4?

Im really hoping to even be considered for the Charter program if not direct admission.

I really appreciate any comments through email or below
Thank you so much for your time in advance! :)

btw I come to your blog often its a great inspiration and hope for me at this time of anxiety..

    Thank you!

    • My undergraduate GPA was well below 3.0. That was more an indicator of effort in college rather than intelligence. I have seen many people with higher GPAs fail out of medical school.
