When does it end?

May 14, 2010

Almost 1 full year later the letters still keep rolling in…. and to arrive in my inbox during Finals week…how inappropriate!

SOM - UMDNJ

Dear

Thank you for your interest in UMDNJ – School of Osteopathic Medicine.

We have reviewed your application; unfortunately we are not able to give your application any further consideration for this academic year. Our school receives far more applications than seats are available in the entering class.

Many students in this situation benefit by entering a Masters of Biomedical Science or similar post graduate programs. We have included information on the UMDNJ – Graduate School of Biomedical Science program at our Stratford Campus.

Again, thank you for your interest in our school. Please accept our best wishes for success in your pursuit for a career as an osteopathic physician.

A Little Late to Join the Bandwagon

April 6, 2010

Really UAB? It’s freaking April. Next years cycle begins in about 8 weeks……

Dear UASOM Applicant:

Members of the Committee on Admissions for the University of Alabama School of Medicine have carefully reviewed and evaluated your application.  Based on that review, the Committee has decided not to pursue your application.

Committee members work diligently to select from the applicants they believe will make the best physicians and meet the health care needs of the State of Alabama.  This year our school received 2410 applications for 176 positions.  Because of the significant number of applicants and limited number of positions available, many were not offered interviews.

Thank you for your interest in attending our school and please accept our best wishes as you make plans to further your career goals.

On behalf of the Admissions Committee.

The Big One

February 3, 2010

The report from la famila back in the US is that my rejection from USUHS came in. I guess the dream school will have to remain just that….. a dream.

Tulane No-Go

January 7, 2010

Nothing to start the year off like another rejection

Tulane University School of Medicine
Office of Admissions and Student Affairs

January 7, 2010

Dear Applicant:
We regret to inform you that your application will receive no further consideration for the class to enter the Tulane University School of Medicine in 2010. As you know the class is limited to 177 students, and the available places do not go very far in accommodating the large number of highly qualified applicants who have applied to the Tulane University School of Medicine. We hope that you receive an acceptance to a medical school of your choice and that both success and happiness will be yours as you continue your training.
Sincerely,
Marc J. Kahn, M.D.
Senior Associate Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs

An Update of Nothing

December 6, 2009

USUHS said they would be done reviewing my application in 6 weeks. It’s been over two months so I finally e-mailed them asking for an update.
All I got back was. Application complete bla bla bla still being reviewed bla bla bla interviews run till March bla bla bla….

What am I gonna do if I had a midterm in the middle of the Caribbean and they want an interview in Maryland!?

Waste of Time, Effort, and Paper

December 6, 2009

I actually got a pen-signed-in-ink rejection letter from a DO school in California. Seriously guys? An e-mail would have been just fine.

Holding Pattern

November 24, 2009

I haven’t been doing much application wise. Although I did speak in front of my old AMSA chapter about some details concerning the application process.

I sent in the next deposit of $2000 for SGU and I’m starting to get a little anxious as time to leave the US comes closer and closer.

I found out one of my friends is getting her masters at American Military University and another friend is going for his masters in Paris….. I’m super jealous.

I’ve decided that any secondaries I haven’t done by this point are too late and hopeless so I’m withdrawing my app from a few of those places.

For the meanwhile I’ll just sit and wait for rejections to roll in. I’m also still waiting to hear back from USUHS, so it’s making me nervous.

Back from Mental Vacation

November 9, 2009

Sorry for the lack of updates in the last couple of weeks, I’ve been taking a mental vacation since I had to deal with some big personal life changes…. But I should be back this week.

Just to sum up the last two weeks I turned in another $100 MD secondary today, and have been rejected from 10 DO schools.

Funny thing about DO rejections is that a lot of them have been formally in writing! What a waste of everyone’s  time and money. They should learn a lesson from the MD schools and just e-mail rejections.

Tally

October 26, 2009

Another secondary done and another $80 I probably burned.

AACOMAS Processed

October 25, 2009

Wow…. finally huh? Yeah, that only took them 7 weeks. You would think AMCAS would be slower due to a larger pool of applicants.

Hopefully some “screened” secondaries come in from the DOs.

Accepted!……..well kinda……

October 21, 2009

In an epic turn of events, St. George’s sent me their admission decision 2 weeks earlier than expected!

You can imagine the look on my face when there was a fatty envelope sitting in my mailbox.

I actually received the decision last week, but I’ve kept it on the dl because I was having some personal doubts. I’m actually still kinda afraid of going. And even though this is a great opportunity, I am worried about how it will interfere with other opportunities. For example: what will I do if I am asked for an interview in February and I’m stuck on an island hundreds of miles away from the US?

But I guess the cat is out of the bag now because I sent in the confirmation letter and $500 deposit today to hold my spot until at least the end of Oct.

So the Charter Foundation Program I’ve been accepted to has some very specific conditions on transitioning to the medical school:

1. I have to earn a 3.2 GPA

2. I must pass all classes with at least a C (lol my speciality in college)

3. Pass the Premedical Science Comprehensive Exam

4. Receive Recommendation by the Program Director

Coursework:

  • Abnormal Psychology
  • Biochemistry
  • Human Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Learning Strategies for Pre-Professional Programs (lol, I probably need that one the most)

The program begins in Grenada, West Indies the second week of Jan 2010.

If all goes well, I will be starting full blown medical school in Aug of 2010.

It really puts a weird spin on my secondaries for all the other schools…. do I keep doing them?

Small Miracle

October 21, 2009

In an event that I can only describe as divine intervention, U of AL reduced their secondary from the whopping 10 essay questions to a policy of answering only those that significantly describe your premed journey. AKA “Don’t send us BS essays you have to make up to answer.”

Apparently all of the other applicants where hitting writers block with it too.  I was finally able to send it in after having worked on it for weeks.
Also sent another secondary in (only 2 essays). So thats over $150 in secondary fees  this week. Cute.

Just more of the same

October 14, 2009

Score is now 0-2-1

Your application for admission to the 2010 entering class of Indiana University School of Medicine has been carefully reviewed.  We regret to inform you that your record does not make it possible for us to include your application in the group selected for further consideration.  There are far more applicants than there are places in medical school and, unfortunately, we are only able to interview a limited number of applicants.

We hope that you will be successful in gaining admission to another program of your choice.

Who are you applying to for $75?

October 13, 2009

W/U?

I just got another secondary out of the inbox and into the outbox. But it’s NBD cause it took less than 2 hours to complete. If you’re applying this cycle, like IDK my BFF Jill,  I’m sure you can guess which one it was.

On the job hunting front, I was told by the university I applied to that I am not qualified for the salaried Researched Assistant positions (they want 2 years full time experience) ….. seriously……… However they expressed interest in me applying for the Technician level jobs which are hourly @ $24/hr if you have a degree………*sigh*

TISNF!

God that will NEVER get old!

Another Tally on the Chalkboard

October 8, 2009

Submitted another secondary today. Took me a while because there were 2 3,500 character essays. What was funny was that I realized my uncle worked at their hospital a long time ago, so I had something to fill in the “do you know anybody associated” section.

Probably another $85 down the drain.

First Official Rejection!

October 6, 2009

I finally got my first official “absolutely not” from Virginia Commonwealth today. They even told me that I was not getting a secondary. So I guess that saved me both time and money.

Oh well.

I think that puts me at 0-1-1 (if you count the Caribbean as a tie since they haven’t gotten back to me with the results of their interview.)

AMCAS Application Processed

September 26, 2009

AMCAS notified my they have processed my application. It only took them 3 weeks instead of the stated 4 weeks. Secondaries from “mandatory” secondary schools have already rolled in…… yay……… -_-
No screened secondaries have come in yet…..surprise surprise

USUHS Secondary Application Submitted

September 26, 2009

I mailed my secondary for my dream school on Thurs. Thank god there was no additional application fee.

Most of the forms ended with me putting a bunch of  “N/A”s everywhere because I had no prior military experience.

However the whopper to deal with was an additional 700 word essay about military medicine.

Both my friends that applied to USUHS already had their interviews, and at least one is a pretty much a shoe in. I’m so jealous.  I think I would have a heart attack if I got a call back.

Royally Rejected

September 26, 2009

Well that didn’t take long huh? Got my first rejection today! At it’s a special one at that.

I got rejected from St. Georges in the Carribean! Wooo hooo. Man what a big let down huh? And it only took them a couple of weeks to figure it out. Wow….. way to set the bar.

BUT….. they did give me a counter offer which I accepted. They still want to interview me for potentially two programs.

#1. A one semester post-bac in the Caribbean that starts in Jan/Feb. If I get a 3.3 and have committee approval then I move into the Med School. If I don’t get in I’m out thousands of dollars and have no extra degree to show for the work.

#2. An MPH that starts in Jan/Feb but I must get a 3.5 and then have committee approval. Great………. A whole extra year on “the rock” as they call it at the admissions seminar.

…and the big catch is that I don’t get to pick which program I want to push for. They get to pick after the interview…

The plot thickens. My interview is in 4 days….yikes!

Current score 0 for 1 with dozens to go!
